* Respect and decorum are vital for a harmonious game. When the table is split on what to do, the GM will ask for a table poll to vote on a group consensus.
The GM and player will decide together what happens next. Having backup characters can add new layers to the party dynamics.
* Challenges will have multiple solutions within characters' capabilities. I'll avoid creating no-win situations due to the party's limitations, though I may use clear no-win scenarios to push the plot forward.
* Expect a narrative style akin to pulp action: character-driven plots, clear paths forward, minimal complexities, and a world that embraces colorful heroes (think Discworld).
* I'll provide a simplified journal outline (NPCs, Locations, Quests), with the GM adding details as the adventure unfolds. Players manage their own notes and contributions.
* I'll share a general adventure design breakdown to shed light on the power balance. Adventure arcs may diverge from these design targets.

Lines
These are the lines-in-the-sand. It's something we agree upon as a group and decide on the things that simply do not exist in our campaign world. The point is to get together and play a fun fantasy game, not be weighed down the the ethical dilemmas from our everyday lives.

The big obvious ones are:
* No slavery
** Things can become problematic in this regard, since it can be easy to slide into the comedy of hiring <s>slaves</s> unpaid interns. Some fantasy worlds we might decide to completely side step by saying slavery doesn't exist in this universe, other worlds we might decide slavery exists in the backdrop of reality but our campaign won't have anything to do with it, and yet others we might decide slavery exists and our characters are driven to liberate the enslaved. In any case, a line is drawn where we/our characters will not be the enslavers, regardless of how many unpaid interns we might like to have on staff.
* no rape/sexual assault
** obvious reasoning here, too real for fantasy and has no place at the gaming table.
* no bigotry (racism/homophobia/transphobia/sexism/etc)
** Things become a gray area with characters having a variety of ancestries, and how other characters within the world might react to certain ancestries. An easy way to handle this is generally characters might find it unusual to see certain ancestries in certain areas, but have no fears about them reductive opinions about their ancestry.
* etc

Campaign-specific ones:
But we might decide, as a group to draw some lines to things like: no stealing or no bloodshed.

For the no stealing/no bloodshed type of examples: it might be because we have personal, IRL, convictions surrounding it

Or, in an interesting twist, it might be story-related such as playing a campaign. Maybe we are all clerics and champions of a goody two-shoes diety where we took an oath to never lie, steal, or draw blood. The party then has to use clever roleplaying and problem-solving to find ways through all encounters and combats with non-lethal attacks and such.

Veils
These are the things we decide can happen, they just happen "off-camera" behind a veil.

An easy example: maybe not everyone wants to see a player roleplay with the GM through a scene where the barbarian beats the crap out of the hog-tied villain-king for information, but everyone at the table absolutely agrees it fits the plot, and is a satisfying comeuppance for the villain-king. That event can absolutely happen, it just happens once the camera cuts to the next scene.

Other examples could be raunchy flirting/sex between characters, cringey attempts at k-pop dance sequences, interrogation sequences, etc. We might agree that R-rated stuff absolutely happens in this world, but the gaming table is all PG/PG-13 stuff.

Deciding Lines and Veils
We should just be clear during our session 0 where we want out lines and veils to be. It just creates an overall cleaner expectation, and there will be plenty of other things to focus on within the plot and scene encounters.

We can always add new things to the lists as we go (or remove them), depending on how comfortable people are with certain aspects of the world.

Lines can also be drawn for how we approach things as characters, rather than wholly striking things from the world.

For example, we might decide stealing is a necessary evil in order to defeat the villain-king, but our characters then develop a moral conviction to "pay it forward" and give back to the world in greater value than what they stole. This can even be decided at the plot-level, where stealing from the rich and giving to the poor is an overarching theme of the campaign.

Infodumps will also probably contain useful information or examples, maybe will contain common pitfalls and other things to consider. It might be an additional context of the history that led to things being the way they are, in hopes it makes things make more sense.

What you see is what you get
I have no real intention to edit the infodumps. I have started applying some section headers to make them more readable.

For the most part though, the examples I'll play out or the historical context will take a lot of extra explanation.

Sometimes its easier for me to just get all the brainvomit out, then pull out the parts I need for simpler explanations. I am trying to capture the big ideas AND the nuances at the same time without scaring people away. But in the interest of time management, I shouldn't stress too much about editing down the Infodumps.

Some MediaWiki Context
A semi-quick aside about the fuck I'm talking about: Mediawiki has the ability to make pages about your pages.
*In this example you have a beans page, an article with a description of bean varieties, how to cook them, how to grow them, etc.
*By default, mediawiki assumes you'll have a talk:beans page.
**The "Talk" namespace should be editor's notes about what the article needs (sections to expanded, research needed, etc.)
***so talk:beans might be a message reminding me to update the section on pinto beans and to find a picture of bean soup.
*I created a custom namespace for Infodumps, so each page can have it's own in depth ramblings, if needed.
**infodump:beans would be a deep dive into bean lore and mythology, and maybe some personal anecdotes about beans.

Orphaned Skill Checks
Trying to use skill checks or other actions without justification or context can be problematic.

An example I ran into a lot one time:

* A friend has a sneaky archer type in a Skyrim type game. He really liked to sneak around and shoot people with the bow for bonus sneak attack damage.
** All cool, I love those play styles too. That's been like 85% of my Breath of the Wild playthrough.
** But in skyrim, you can just... crouch down and be "sneaking" then get the bonus damage if nobody is actively looking at you.
* So he would, in mid-combat, say "okay so I sneak, then I'm going to shoot my bow at the guy." His character would basically be standing out in the open, crouch down, and somehow be considered stealthy and somehow that would generate bonus damage?
* I'd have to keep asking him "but what are you doing to sneak around?" His response was generally "I'm crouched low to the ground behind this guy's back". In combat there really isn't directional facing, so the only way to do something like that is through magic/invisibility. Generally you'd need to justify sneaking around by means of finding cover and concealment.
** It took him a while to break that habit/pattern of trying to replicate a gameplay loop from one game into the gameplay loop of another. It's understandable given how video games are set up, but there needs to be some more narrative support being it in tabletop play
* Similarly, just coming out of the gate saying "okay I roll for perception" and look at the GM to wait for a response, is usually going to be met with "okay, but what are you doing? Are you listening carefully, or scanning the horizon, or what?" The DC of the check and the type of information you get would depend on how you are trying to perceive and how you are going about it.

Failing Forward
I will have stitched out a general plot direction for the scene, but no details are typically set in stone. If they are, it'll be a fairly obvious macguffin.

I want a like-amount of roleplay and forward momentum to happen from both successes and failures. It's kinda bummer to have successes be cool moments of plot momentum and failures being the buzzkill of a stanky fart in an elevator.

Failures can easily have a farce-like quality or ironic humor about them. Descriptive roleplaying the schadenfreude can be a fun way of humanizing our characters for some extra depth but without having to act through something awkward to act.

An example:
Scene: You want to bring the groceries into the house, you bought ice cream and also got paper bags. Your dog always demands a walk to the park within minutes of you getting home.

Intent: Load it all up in one trip and get inside quickly so the ice cream doesn't melt.
+
Success of the Roll
What the result means
Our roleplay target / the check's endpoint
Possible ideas to roleplay, explaining your result in the scene
Critical Success
Do it in one trip, and it goes super fast
The ice cream gets put away and everything else is super easy to put away, which gives you a chance to surprise your dog with the leash

* you had loaded your cart and then the conveyor belt to group items
* you had someone in the house ready there to help
* the kitchen counters were clear for landing
Success
You do it in one trip
The ice cream is put away just fine, but the rest takes longer. Your dog comes to find you right as you finish

* You had to sort out the front door keys by feel
* your fingers were straining at all the bags
* the sound of your dog waking up
Failure
One of the bag handles start to rip as you pick it up, forcing two trips
You take the ice cream in first and it is put away just fine, the rest goes very slow.
Your dog judges you all through the second trip.

* which bag's handle ripped
* what your character's "aw shit" reaction was
* how your dog came to find you
* the crushing weight of your dog's judgemental eyes as your put stuff away.
Critical Failure
One of the bags rips open in the trunk, it needs reinforcement or repacking into a new bag
The ice cream goes in too late and it's texture is weird since it's partly refrozen.
You need to deal with loose groceries.

* which bag ripped open, what spilled
* how you repaired the rip
* your character's reaction to it
In this skill check:

The bag ripping would just mean more steps are needed, significantly delaying your efforts to the ice cream inside. The arc of the scene is the ice cream getting inside but the skill check actually has nothing directly to do about the ice cream, and more about the way you load up the groceries.

Consider: A lot of people might build the skill check with a more surface level approach of: failure is the ice cream melts and is ruined, and a crit fail is all the bags rip and all the groceries are ruined because the fell into the mud.

That approach would completely derail the arc of the "get the ice cream inside" scene, because crit success and crit fail would make the character's situation go in two different directions. The simpler approach might be more appropriate if the arc of the scene was "get through this crazy afternoon in one piece", since the ruined groceries only complicate the day, instead of ruining the entire task.

They key here is the resolution of time. Is the context of this scene the 10 minute task of getting the bags inside? or the 4 hours of this crazy afternoon? What is the context of the skill check?

Key Takeaway: The GM and Player should both agree on what the main thrust of the scene/encounter is before the die is even cast. The degrees of success don't really need to be planned out ahead of time (though it can help), but Gm and player should both have a quick back and forth about what they think would happen that made that result. Then the player should decide what they want to put their character through that leads them to the result.

The player rolls a fail, the GM says it takes two trips, both agree the dog definitely judges them. The player would rather explore the handle ripping and the colorful reaction the character has, the dog's judgement is just the icing on the cake. A different player might decide the focus on their character's internalizing of the dog's judgement, the bag ripping is simply the set-up to the gag.

There's plenty to roleplay off of a failure, and thus the plot is still driven forward!

Lessons Learned from Fate
I learned a lot in playing Fate Accelerated a while ago, that system focuses a lot on narrative description. Anyone can create an advantage as their action, which if the rolls are successful, will generate some boons for others to use. You are the GM and players need to figure out a narrative explanation for those boons, and then if they are used they need to be able to be used.

An example is a warehouse brawl scene:<blockquote>The Barbarian might be the best at punching, and the Wizard might usually be int he support role. But the Goons are about to rush the Wizard, so the Barbarian might decide to Create an Advantage by [Knocking Over Some Crates], and is successful on the roll. The Wizard can then use the [Fallen Crates] to boost his attempt at [Evading the Goons], by describing the Goons being slowed down by them. There is no "nope, the goons are too far from the crates" unless the scene has substantially progressed past the warehouse brawl.</blockquote>I really liked this approach, where advantages can be generated left and right. You can sacrifice one of your actions to generate some boosts for others to succeed on theirs. It's a net gain for the party at the expense of part of your turn, the definition of teamwork. I also liked that it gave everyone the ability to do SOMETHING on their turn, and that something was legit useful and never felt like a last resort. There's nothing fun about being forced to waste your turn because there's nothing available for you to do.

Fate also had a fail forward concept. Failing a roll meant you still achieve the action, it just came with increasing degrees of complications to the narrative (usually via [Bad Stuff] happening alongside your action). It made your upcoming rolls harder, or added steps, and enough of them over a long time might alter the trajectory of the plot, but never grind things to a halt.

The only problem with Fate was it all demanded a high degree of narrative/idea generation, compared to something like Pathfinder that had more adjudication in it's ruleset. While Fate was great in that way it also created a high barrier of entry in some ways, since some of the things happening were so freeform it was hard to connect it to other ideas. I can see that with the right play group it'd be an absolute blast, but I know for myself I want something with more structure.

The lesson learned: Failure just means complication.

It just means something else was introduced that you'll have to deal with later - whether that is later in the same scene or many chapters later. Dealing with it might range anywhere from a few lines of dialog without any rolls to an entire sidequest. It felt like a friendlier more fun and satisfying method of dealing with failed skill checks.

Intention then Action
# Think about how the character would respond. What would they try to do?
# State it to the GM what you'd like to try to accomplish and why
# GM and player decide on an appropriate skill/action to use mechanically, as well as the circumstances of the DC check.
# see Orphaned_Skill_Checks for some additional context

Roll then Roleplay
# Nothing sucks more than a great roleplay sequence, then to roll like crap and your attempt fails.
# I want to adopt a roll then roleplay baseline where characters "fail forward" when rolls come up shitty.
# Following #3 above: once the DC and appropriate skill is sorted out, the result will determine our endpoint.
# Next, comes the fun part of roleplaying how you get from point A to point B in your failed attempt.
# see : Failing_Forward for some reassurance
# The same applies to a success too - the roll determines the endpoint but we roleplay the path traveled.
# Successes and failures should both have like-amounts of "screen time" and satisfaction.

Style of Roleplaying
Performative Roleplay
This is stage improv. You know your character, their mannerisms, and you can become them in your reaction. Impeccable improv is difficult to do for most people, but being unflappable in your portrayal of the character is the lofty goal of this end of the spectrum.

Even better if you can be "in character" alongside others who might not be, and you can slip in and out of player chat and character dialog. Again, lofty goal but can be fun as hell if the person can act and made a over the top meme character.

Descriptive Roleplay
This is just a 3rd person narrative description of the character's actions and/or internal motivations. It can be dry, simple, or vividly colorful and performed in it's own way. Your acting is more the part of the narrator rather than the character, and it's a form of acting in it's own right. There is a lot to play with in vivid descriptions and dialog.

A good analogy is you are acting out the comic book page rather than playing that character's part in the movie scene. You'll still be describing how they leap to the side, how the thing smashing down affects them, and the catchphrase they use. Similar to how you'd use different comic book speech bubbles to give context to the dialog, you'd describe the manner in which they say it.

Find your balance
Some people focus on a strong description, some people play around with the fun ideas, or you might utilize ideas out of the table banter from the other players. Sometimes you'll slide between performative and descriptive throughout a scene, and sometimes even mid-sentence.

The underlying factor is your familiarity with the character and the back and forth with the GM and other players in the scene. It's whatever is most comfortable for you, all the different styles mesh together surprisingly well.

In my experience, I've found descriptive roleplay serves as the main backbone for most of the game. Some well-placed well-acted performative characters can be some great highlights along the way. Don't let IRL skill at acting get in the way of enjoying the game :)

* which bag's handle ripped

Discarde: Discarde moved page Tips and Table Etiquette to Table Etiquette

GM Assumptions
I'll try to maintain the following agreements:

* I'll never be your adversary. The enemies you encounter certainly will be and I'll be playing them as such, but I'll always remain another player at the table.
* I'm always available to ask for options in any scene if you are at a loss.
** I won't indicate the most tactically sound thing to do, but I can help give actions at large that are possible in this situation.
* For safety and maximum fun, I will set up lines and veils for each campaign I run. I'll consult with players during the Session 0 to iron out these lists.

Player Assumptions
I approach the gaming tables assuming players will:

* Remain attentive to the scene and the table play. If something calls for your attention, we might collectively take a quick pause or the GM can also auto-pilot your character through the scene for a bit and apply minor retcons when you return.
* Be familiar with your character and their motivations, it's easy to fall into the pattern of going with the group's hive mind and lose grip on your character's flavor of moving about the world.
** If you aren't sure how to roleplay it, simply being descriptive about why they are behaving the way they are is more than plenty.
* Support your teammates! Part of Pathfinder 2e's core thesis is teamwork and party dynamics, which can be a departure from previous versions. Much of the mojo of the game comes from helping each other stack bonuses so that the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts
** Many character options lean hard into this and most characters have multiple means to support each other.

Metagaming
In general, metagaming is a form of cheating and generally frowned upon.

* Character vs Player knowledge
** It is important to consider that players might learn things from the GM or other players that their characters wouldn't otherwise be privy to. Play them assuming they don't know about those things until otherwise stated.
* Published adventure plots
** Most of the things we'll be playing will be from published stuff. Players could easily obtain the PDF, read through it, and then play through it with that knowledge in hand.
*** This is kinda unavoidable if players end up repeating a PFS scenario on a new character, but still everyone should attempt to separate player and character knowledge.
* published monster stats
** Same as above, monsters can be looked up in published bestiaries, Archives of Nethys, or elsewhere on the internet. Embrace the cinematography of the encounter and the struggle the characters are facing, even if the abilities are well-known. Plus there are in-game methods to get access to some of this information.
* bribing the GM
** Just cause someone bought the GM a yacht doesn't get them a free pass in the next boss fight.
** My only main method of accepting bribes with in-person play might be someone who ordered the game night pizza gets an extra hero point or two, but that's about it and it's not worth the expense. Also, kinda moot with virtual play :)

* Character vs Player knowledge
** It is important to consider that players might learn things from the GM or other players that their characters wouldn't otherwise be privy to. Play them assuming they don't know about those things until otherwise stated.
* Published adventure plots
* published monster stats
** Same as above, monsters can be looked up in published bestiaries, Archives of Nethys, or elsewhere on the internet. Embrace the cinematography of the encounter and the struggle the characters are facing, even if the abilities are well-known. Plus there are in-game methods to get access to some of this information.
* bribing the GM
